Manga creators from Japan and the US present an international showcase of horror. Collected for the first time in Betwixt: A Horror Manga Anthology, six short stories reveal the universal fear of the space between the known and unknown. Will anyone cross that border?Featuring stories from a range of award-winning and popular creators, as well as a foreword and exclusive cover art by global phenomenon, Junji Ito.Ryo Hanada (creator of Devil's Line), Aki Shimizu (creator of the Suikoden III manga), and Shima Shinya (creator of Lost Lad London and cowriter of Star Wars: The High Republic, The Edge of Balance) each tell uniquely Japanese tales of ghosts and creatures who exist alongside us. American creative duo, Becky Cloonan and Michael Conrad (cowriters of Wonder Woman and Batgirls) along with duo Leslie Hung (cocreator of Snotgirl) and Sloane Leong (creator of A Map to the Sun) and up and coming creator Hua Hua Zhu round out the anthology with tales that would make anyone paranoid about who they may encounter....Rated:T+

Gr 10 Up-A horror anthology featuring six tales that focus on what could exist "in between." In one story, a drowning man is captured by a kappa-possessed girl who devours souls to gain power, but his compassion toward her helps reveal her murderer. In another, a cursed mirror brings forth a sinister double who believes she can best live Kath's life for her. None of these stories can go too deep, but they do entice readers to question what could be lurking just beyond their perception. While the cover may draw in readers that devour Junji Ito's work, they may be dismayed to find that he only contributed to the cover and a foreword. Uniquely, this book contains works in the traditional manga format by Japanese authors, read right to left. Then, from what is typically the back cover, there are the stories from American authors that meet in the middle. Different artistic styles are presented, both visually and in the author's voice, so stories may appeal to different readers. Horror enthusiasts should find something to enjoy. There is violence in some stories and very brief non-sexual nudity. VERDICT Recommended, especially for those that wish to grow the horror section in their manga and graphic novel collections.-Lisa Rowland
